Lucid Group (NASDAQ: LCID) shares jumped more than 21% on Tuesday after Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal revealed a 5% stake in the electric vehicle maker, boosting investor confidence in the company.
Lucid stock rose 21.8% to $7.92, after touching $8.50 during the session. Trading volume climbed to about 35.2 million shares as investors reacted to the Saudi investor’s newly disclosed position.
The filing showed Prince Alwaleed owns around 19.5 million shares with voting authority. The stake was reached on July 23 and was described as a passive investment, meaning it was not intended to influence company control.
While the move lifted sentiment, it did not provide new funding for Lucid or change its financial outlook.
Rally Exceeds Stake Value
Lucid’s market reaction was much larger than the size of the investment itself. The prince’s stake was worth about $155 million, while the company’s market value increased by more than $550 million during the trading session.
The sharp response reflected investor optimism around the backing of a prominent Saudi investor. However, the purchase mainly boosted confidence rather than improving Lucid’s balance sheet.
Saudi Arabia has already played an important role in Lucid’s growth strategy through support from the Public Investment Fund. The latest stake adds to the perception that the company continues to have strong backing from the region.
Lucid shares also benefited from heavy short interest. Around 65 million shares were sold short by mid-July, representing nearly 38% of the public float. However, there is no clear evidence that the rally was caused by forced short covering.
Cash Concerns Remain
Despite the stock surge, Lucid’s biggest challenge remains its financial position. The company recorded about $1.4 billion in free cash flow losses during the first quarter as it continued investing in production and expansion.
Lucid reported roughly $4.7 billion in liquidity following recent funding activities. It also secured an additional $800 million loan from a Saudi investment affiliate in July, providing more financial support.
Still, investors remain concerned about whether the company can reduce losses and improve profitability. Lucid’s premium EV strategy requires stronger demand and higher deliveries to support long-term growth.
During the second quarter, Lucid produced 4,774 vehicles and delivered 3,953. The gap between production and deliveries improved compared with the previous quarter, but the company still needs to convert inventory into revenue.
Earnings Could Decide Direction
Lucid’s second-quarter earnings report on August 4 will be the next major test for the company. Investors are expected to focus on cash usage, production targets, and management’s plans to reach profitability.
The company previously suspended its annual production forecast of 25,000 to 27,000 vehicles, leaving the market waiting for updated guidance.
Analyst Andres Sheppard of Cantor Fitzgerald has maintained a Hold rating on Lucid with an $8 price target. He expects investors to look for a clearer strategy to accelerate the company’s path toward profitability.
The Saudi investment has provided Lucid with a powerful short-term boost, but the company’s future depends on improving operations, increasing deliveries, and reducing its dependence on external funding.
For now, the stock rally reflects renewed investor enthusiasm. The upcoming earnings report will show whether that optimism is supported by stronger fundamentals or simply driven by the latest vote of confidence from a major investor.
