TLDR

  • Microsoft extends Databricks alliance through the 2030s to expand Azure AI.
  • Databricks moves more core operations onto Azure Databricks infrastructure.
  • Azure Cobalt chips power faster AI workloads with stronger security features.
  • Microsoft expands Databricks AI tools across its enterprise product ecosystem.
  • Broader Azure integration strengthens enterprise AI and cloud data capabilities.

Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) closed at $381.58, down 2.24%, after an early rally faded during a sharp mid-morning selloff. The decline came as Microsoft announced a broader long-term partnership with Databricks focused on expanding Azure-based artificial intelligence and data services. The agreement extends into the 2030s and expands collaboration across cloud infrastructure, enterprise AI, and analytics.

Microsoft and Databricks expand long term Azure partnership

Microsoft and Databricks expanded their strategic partnership with a new agreement running into the 2030s. The companies will increase collaboration across Azure infrastructure, enterprise data platforms, and artificial intelligence services. The move strengthens Microsoft’s position in enterprise AI through deeper integration with Databricks technologies.

Under the agreement, Databricks will run more of its core business operations on Azure Databricks. The company will also build its unified lakehouse using Microsoft’s cloud platform. This approach allows Databricks to operate its own services on the same infrastructure offered to enterprise customers.

Microsoft will continue integrating the Databricks Data and AI Platform across its products. The expanded relationship adds broader support for Genie and Unity AI Gateway throughout Microsoft’s ecosystem. As a result, organizations can connect enterprise data with AI services inside existing business environments.

Azure infrastructure and AI integrations receive broader expansion

Databricks will expand its use of Azure Cobalt processors for data-intensive and agentic AI workloads. The company already uses Azure Cobalt 100 infrastructure across selected operations. It also plans to adopt Azure Cobalt 200, which delivers higher performance with built-in memory encryption.

The broader integration connects Databricks capabilities with Microsoft Entra, Azure Data Lake Storage, and Azure security services. It also extends across Microsoft OneLake, Power BI, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Foundry, Power Platform, Microsoft 365, Teams, and Copilot. These integrations allow organizations to manage enterprise data, AI models, and governance within connected workflows.

The companies stated that customers can improve operational efficiency through unified data management and AI deployment. They also highlighted stronger governance, performance, and cost management across enterprise environments. These capabilities support organizations running complex business applications on Azure.

Enterprise adoption supports Microsoft’s broader AI strategy

Databricks has worked with Microsoft for nearly a decade on enterprise data and cloud services. The latest agreement expands an existing relationship instead of creating a new partnership. It also builds on several product announcements made during the Data and AI Summit in June.

Microsoft continues expanding Azure as a foundation for enterprise AI development. The company has increased investment in custom infrastructure, cloud services, and integrated productivity platforms during recent years. This strategy combines cloud computing, analytics, and AI into a unified enterprise ecosystem.

Thousands of organizations already use Azure Databricks for analytics and artificial intelligence workloads. Customers include Banco Bradesco, the Cincinnati Reds, Electrolux, SMBC and Unilever. The expanded partnership aims to improve platform performance, enterprise readiness, and AI capabilities while reinforcing Microsoft’s long-term Azure growth strategy.
