World Foundation raised $52.5 million through a locked WLD token sale as demand grows for digital tools that verify humans online.
Pantera Leads Locked WLD Token Sale
World Foundation, the nonprofit steward of the World protocol, completed a $52.5 million strategic sale of WLD tokens. All tokens purchased in the transaction carry a one-year lockup, limiting immediate market circulation.
Pantera Capital led the first close of the sale. Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto, and other investors also joined the round.
The foundation said the tokens sold are intended for use within World Network. The tokens do not represent equity, profit rights, or return claims tied to Tools for Humanity, the for-profit company behind World’s hardware and software.
World Foundation said the new capital will support global expansion of World ID. The technology is designed for enterprises, consumers, and AI agents that need stronger proof-of-human tools.
World ID Push Targets AI Deepfakes
World ID allows users to verify that they are unique humans through a one-time Orb scan. The system creates a digital credential without exposing the user’s identity.
The foundation said World ID uses cryptography and anonymized multi-party computation to protect privacy. The credential is stored on the user’s phone and can be used across supported applications.
Pantera Capital general partner Cosmo Jiang said, “The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development.” He added that enterprise interest is rising as AI-generated content spreads.
World said AI agents, deepfakes, and synthetic identities are creating challenges for online services. The foundation named digital advertising, dating apps, voting systems, creative markets, and video communications as areas that may need stronger verification.
World ID 4.0 is designed for enterprise-scale use. The upgrade allows developers to build more credentials into the World ID stack using zero-knowledge proofs.
Network Growth Faces Regulatory Scrutiny
World Foundation said more than 39 million people have joined World Network. More than 18 million users have completed Orb verification, while the network has generated over 475 million World ID proofs since launch.
The foundation said World ID is being integrated with platforms including Zoom, DocuSign, Okta, Vercel, and Tinder. These integrations are part of World’s shift from network building to wider product use.
World was originally conceived by Sam Altman, Max Novendstern, and Alex Blania. The project aims to help people prove they are unique humans while protecting privacy in an AI-driven internet.
The latest WLD token sale brings total project funding to about $492.5 million. Tools for Humanity has raised roughly $240 million in venture equity, while World Foundation and related entities previously raised $200 million through WLD token sales.
World has also faced privacy and regulatory reviews over its biometric verification model. Authorities in Spain, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the Philippines have investigated or restricted parts of the project’s data collection practices.
WLD traded near $0.37, giving the token a market capitalization of about $1.31 billion. The token was down roughly 2% over 24 hours as the foundation announced the new funding round.
