TLDR

  • Anthropic released a study saying robots will take 40 years to replace just 10% of job tasks if prices fall at historic rates.
  • Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted a “ChatGPT moment” for robotics at CES 2026, pointing to faster adoption.
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk says Optimus robots could go on sale as early as next year.
  • Morgan Stanley projects the humanoid robot market could pass $5 trillion by 2050.
  • Nvidia VP Rev Lebaredian said physical AI is expanding robot use across manufacturing, logistics, and energy, with Samsung and LG both ramping up related work.

Anthropic has published a new study that pushes back on the idea that robots will quickly replace human workers. The company found that if robot prices fall at the same pace as past technology, it would take 40 years for robots to take over just 10% of job tasks. That timeline is much slower than some tech leaders have suggested.

#Anthropic just published a new report on which jobs today’s robots can already do, and what happens when you combine #robotics with #Al

The study adds to a growing debate about how fast humanoid robots will become part of daily work and home life. Tech executives do not agree on the answer. Some expect rapid change. Others see a slower, more gradual shift.

Nvidia and Tesla See Faster Robot Adoption

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke about robotics at CES 2026 in January. He predicted a “ChatGPT moment” for the robotics industry. He pointed to agents, self-driving cars, and humanoid robots as signs of fast change ahead.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made similar predictions. He has said the company’s Optimus robot could go on sale as early as next year. Musk has also said he expects a future where most households own a robot.

A 2025 report from Morgan Stanley supports the idea of a large robot market. The report forecasts that humanoid robots could become a market worth more than $5 trillion by 2050. It expects adoption to speed up in the late 2030s, helped by better technology and friendlier regulations.

Anthropic’s report offers a different view. It states that beyond price, other factors will slow robot adoption. These include robot capabilities, worker and consumer preferences, and government regulations.

Other economists have backed up Anthropic’s findings. Apollo chief economist Torsten Sløk wrote that even under fast-moving projections, widespread job displacement from robots will still take decades.

The disagreement also points to a larger pattern. Software has moved fast since the release of ChatGPT. Hardware has moved much slower. It took years after ChatGPT’s debut for a major tech company to release a physical AI device.

Some analysts compare robots to past products like solar panels or televisions, which saw costs drop quickly over time. Others note that other advanced hardware, like smartphones and connected cars, has not seen prices fall the same way.

Nvidia Outlines a Broader Push Into Physical AI

Separately, Nvidia detailed its view of what it calls “physical AI” at a conference in Kazakhstan this week. Rev Lebaredian, the company’s Vice President of Physical AI Simulation, said this technology brings intelligence into machines that operate in the real world.

Lebaredian said robotics and autonomous systems are expected to play a larger role in manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, and energy. He said digital AI agents support tasks like design and research, while physical AI lets robots carry out actions directly.

He pointed to large-scale computing infrastructure as the backbone of this shift, describing “AI factories” that turn energy into intelligence used across industries.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are both expanding their use of physical AI. Samsung plans to convert its global factories into AI-driven operations by 2030, using digital twin simulations and deploying robots for logistics and assembly work.

LG Electronics is applying vision-based AI models to its home robot, called LG CLOiD. The company is also working with Nvidia to use manufacturing and logistics data to train robots for use in homes.

Lebaredian said that workers with deep knowledge of specific industries are well positioned to find new uses for physical AI, if they are given the right tools to build and test it.
