TLDR

  • US-Canada trade talks collapsed Friday, with 50% US tariffs hitting roughly $28 billion in Canadian goods including wine, cement, and hockey sticks
  • Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney promised to match US tariffs “dollar for dollar,” with Canadian retaliatory tariffs set for September 8th
  • Both sides blamed each other for the breakdown, with key disputes over auto tariffs, steel, aluminum, and heavy-duty trucks
  • US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said no new talks are planned with Canada
  • The Canadian Chamber of Commerce warned the tariffs could cause job losses and damage both economies

The US and Canada failed to reach a trade deal late Friday, sending relations between the two countries to a new low. The Trump administration moved forward with 50% tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, and Canada said it would hit back just as hard.

The new US tariffs cover about $28 billion worth of Canadian exports. Products affected include wine, furniture, dairy, cement, clothing, fishing rods, and hockey equipment. That is roughly 5% of what Canada sold to the US last year.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney did not hold back in his response. “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,” he told reporters in Ottawa.

For over a year, Canada has worked intensively and in good faith with the United States to negotiate a new comprehensive trade deal. We have been pragmatic, patient, and persistent. Our goal has always been to get the best deal for Canadians, never a deal at any price or on any…

Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are set to take effect on September 8th. They will target US steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics, and other goods.

The breakdown came as a surprise. Just hours before talks fell apart, President Trump told reporters that negotiators had “pretty much” struck a deal. But by Friday night, both sides were pointing fingers.

Trump’s trade team said Canada made “new demands and walk-backs” that derailed progress made over several days of talks. Carney said it was the US that introduced last-minute terms that were “uneconomic, unfair” and would have limited Canada’s ability to forge its own trade deals with other countries.

Auto Tariffs Were a Major Sticking Point

One of the central disputes involved vehicles. A deal had reportedly been close to lowering auto tariffs from 25% to 15%, but the two sides could not agree on whether medium- and heavy-duty trucks would be included.

Canada wanted the same favorable terms for trucks like Ford’s F-350 and General Motors’ Silverado that were being offered for lighter vehicles. The US resisted, which Carney said would have made Canadian-made trucks less competitive.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford backed Carney’s decision to walk away. “It was a bad deal for Ontario. It was a bad deal for the auto sector, the steel sector and manufacturing sector,” Ford said.

Steel, Lumber, and Spirits Also Caught in the Crossfire

Negotiators had also been working toward tariff relief on Canadian steel, aluminum, and lumber. But those agreements fell apart along with the rest of the deal.

Steel tariffs on Canada now remain at 50%, compared to 25% for most other countries. US steel producers had already pushed back against lowering them.

The spirits industry was also caught in the fallout. Carney had asked Canadian provinces to end their boycott of US wine and spirits this week. That move now looks uncertain, and the US has imposed new duties on Canadian spirits heading south.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the collapse was “a missed opportunity” and confirmed no new negotiations are scheduled.

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce said it would work to help businesses “brace for impact” as the tariff dispute enters a new and more serious phase.
