TLDR

  • HSBC raised its S&P 500 year-end target to 8,100, up from 7,650
  • Strong corporate earnings are the main driver, with first-half 2026 EPS growth near 40%
  • HSBC forecasts full-year 2026 earnings growth of 33%, or $360 EPS
  • AI capital spending is cited as a key catalyst supporting tech and semiconductor stocks
  • HSBC says concerns about Fed rate hikes, geopolitics, and midterm elections are overdone

HSBC lifted its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 8,100 on Tuesday, up from its previous target of 7,650. The bank pointed to stronger-than-expected corporate earnings as the main reason for the upgrade.

The revised target implies about 4.9% upside from the index’s last close. The S&P 500 has already risen 12.75% this year.

Earnings Beat Expectations Across the Board

HSBC strategist Nicole Inui said first-half 2026 earnings-per-share growth came in close to 40%. She expects growth to continue at a pace above 25% in the second half of the year.

The bank forecasts full-year 2026 earnings growth of 33%, which works out to $360 in earnings per share. It applies a price-to-earnings multiple of 22.5 times, broadly in line with historical levels.

Data from LSEG backs up the strong earnings picture. Some 86% of the 492 S&P 500 companies that have reported results beat analyst estimates. The long-term average beat rate is 67.5%.

Inui pointed to AI capital spending as a key driver. She said it is supporting semiconductors and other AI-linked stocks.

HSBC said it remains positive on technology, financials, and industrials. It is more selective on consumer-related sectors.

HSBC Plays Down Key Investor Worries

Four concerns have been on investors’ minds: possible Federal Reserve rate hikes, geopolitical uncertainty, U.S. midterm elections, and rising liquidity needs from IPOs and AI spending.

HSBC said these concerns are largely overdone.

The bank expects the Fed to hold rates steady this year and next. It sees the 10-year Treasury yield ending 2026 at 4.65%.

On the midterm elections, Inui said any market volatility tied to elections tends to be short-lived. She added that geopolitical risk has had limited impact on overall consumer spending.

The bank did flag some areas of caution. It noted that tech valuations have stayed range-bound despite strong earnings and record profit margins. Inui said multiple expansion could be hard to achieve even as fundamentals improve.

She also flagged seasonal September weakness, upcoming inflation data, and regulatory pressure on data centers and social media as possible sources of near-term volatility.

HSBC is not alone in its outlook. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Citigroup all expect the S&P 500 to finish the year at or above 8,000.
