One Solo Bitcoin Miner Just Hit a $244K Jackpot Against Giants
Bitcoin mining today is dominated by enormous pools throwing staggering amounts of computing power at the network around the clock. Foundry, Antpool, F2pool, ViaBTC, and Spiderpool regularly discover blocks, while smaller miners are effectively competing against industrial operations containing thousands upon thousands of machines. Those five pools alone command 78.31% of the hashrate, while everyone else has a bit more than 20%.
That dynamic makes a solo block a very different animal. When someone talks about solo mining, they typically mean a miner or small mining entity attempting to discover a block without splitting the eventual reward among a conventional pool of participants. Find one, and the payday is yours. Miss, and there is no consolation prize.
Large mining pools, like the five pools mentioned above, work differently. Anyone can contribute computing power, and when one of these pools discovers a block, pool members who contribute hashrate receive a portion of the proceeds based largely on the work they contributed. It takes some of the lottery-ticket nature out of mining by trading the possibility of one enormous payday for smaller, more predictable payouts.
Solo mining puts that lottery ticket right back on the table. There are generally two ways to go about it. A miner can run a Bitcoin node, construct their own block templates, and handle the necessary infrastructure themselves. In the 2026 mining environment, that is a tall order, though certainly not impossible.
The other route is to use a solo mining service such as Solo CKPool or Braiins Solo. These services handle much of the plumbing, including the Stratum server, block template construction, and chain tip tracking. The miner still supplies their own hash power and is still trying to discover their own block rather than sharing the reward with a traditional pool.
A 40-Day Drought Ends With 3.147 BTC
Either way, finding a solo block these days is about as close as bitcoin mining gets to winning the lottery. The network’s enormous computing power means individual miners are competing in a mathematical contest where the biggest operations have an overwhelming number of tickets.
And yet, every so often, one of the little tickets wins.
That is exactly what happened on Thursday at block 966351. The miner working through Braiins Solo found the winning hash and collected 3.147 BTC from the block. After nearly 40 days without a solo block, somebody finally cracked one.
“Somewhere, someone’s having a very good day,” Braiins CEO Eli Nagar wrote on X. Congratulations to the miner who just found block 966351 on Braiins Solo. Glad we could be part of it.”
The previous solo victory came Aug. 2 at block 960804, when another miner collected 3.1569 BTC. That block was found through Solo CKPool, meaning two different solo mining services have now produced the network’s last two long-shot winners.
For the industrial mining giants, another BTC block is simply business as usual. For a solo miner, it can be the hit they spend years waiting for. The odds may be brutal, the competition enormous, and the waiting game unforgiving. But block 966351 is a reminder that the Bitcoin network’s mining lottery still occasionally hands the winning ticket to the little guy.
