Russia’s leading bank is getting ready to further entangle themselves in digital assets. Sberbank has declared its intention to further develop lending under crypto-asset-backed collateral, pledging to support Bitcoin, Ethereum and USDT (Tether) for the first time when updated crypto laws are passed.

Sberbank Broadens Its Crypto Collateral Strategy

Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov indicated that the bank has already had hands-on experience successfully dealing with cryptocurrency and was already prepared to adopt new regulations.

Currently, Sberbank considers Bitcoin to be a core digital asset for secured lending, but the bank plans to increase eligible cases of secured lending assets to include Ethereum and USDT upon approval for public circulation by the Bank of Russia.

The plan involves borrowers borrowing rather than selling their digital assets. This presents an opportunity for large crypto holdings at institutions or businesses to gain liquidity without losing market exposure.

Russia has been slowly adding the structure to its crypto legislation, offering new prospects for banks and financial institutions to launch digital-assets solutions.

The bank will adjust its lending qualities to the new rules and expand its product set. As demand for crypto-backed financing grows in the future as regulatory uncertainty wanes, the bank has been preparing for that scenario.
