TLDR

  • Ryanair cancelled 260 flights on Tuesday after a major UK air traffic control failure by NATS.
  • Around 48,000 to 65,000 passengers were affected by the disruption.
  • CEO Michael O’Leary estimates total losses could reach $5 to $6 million.
  • An additional 30 flights were expected to be cancelled on Wednesday due to crew displacement.
  • NATS confirmed the failure was caused by a rogue flight plan with a duplicate airport entry, the same issue as a 2023 incident.

Ryanair (RYAAY) stock slipped 1.79% as the airline faced a fresh operational hit after a major UK air traffic control failure grounded flights across Britain on September 8, 2026. The stock had last traded at EUR 23.08 on September 3, sitting in the lower half of its 52-week range of EUR 21.12 to EUR 30.15.

The airline cancelled 260 flights following a technical failure at NATS, Britain’s air traffic control service. Roughly 48,000 passengers were directly affected, with some reports putting the total disruption figure at over 65,000.

CEO Michael O’Leary said the immediate financial hit came in at between £2.5 million and £3 million ($3.38 million to $4.06 million). That figure covers passenger rights, care, and compensation costs. O’Leary added the total losses could climb to $5 to $6 million.

The airline was also expecting to cancel around 30 more flights on Wednesday. The reason: crews had ended up in the wrong locations after the chaotic Tuesday schedule, and many were logging irregular hours.

What Caused the NATS Failure

NATS told Ryanair the root cause was identical to a 2023 incident. A rogue flight plan containing a duplicate airport entry caused the system to crash, triggering the shutdown of departures across Britain.

Ryanair was among the carriers publicly calling for a full overhaul of NATS following the disruption, according to Reuters.

This is not the first time the airline has pointed the finger at the UK’s air traffic infrastructure. The 2023 failure caused widespread disruption across the industry, and questions remain about why a repeat was possible three years later.

Buybacks Continue in the Background

While the operational chaos played out, Ryanair separately disclosed a share buyback update. Between August 31 and September 4, 2026, the airline repurchased and cancelled 208,945 ordinary shares and 151,288 ADS-linked ordinary shares.

The volume-weighted average price on those ordinary share buybacks ranged from EUR 22.9142 to EUR 23.3160, in line with where the stock has been trading recently.

On September 3, trading volume came in at 215,078 shares with a turnover of EUR 4.239 million. The intraday range that day ran from EUR 22.73 to EUR 23.29.

The juxtaposition is a familiar one for Ryanair investors: management buying back stock at current prices while operational disruptions create short-term earnings pressure.

O’Leary has not changed his tone on NATS. He remains critical of the UK’s air traffic infrastructure and has used this latest failure as further evidence that reform is overdue.

The stock sits at EUR 23.08, well below its 52-week high of EUR 30.15.
