Key Takeaways

  • Moonpay Korea launched Sept. 29 with Kakaobank, Woori Bank, and KB Financial Group partnerships.
  • Kakaobank and Moonpay are targeting international student remittances in under 1 hour.
  • KB Financial Group is exploring stablecoin payments after an earlier trial cut transfer fees by 87%.

Moonpay Sets up Shop in Korea With 3 Banking Heavyweights

Sending money from South Korea to an American bank account could eventually take less time than a lunch break. That’s the proposition behind Moonpay’s latest Asian expansion, which brings three major South Korean financial institutions into its stablecoin ambitions.

On Tuesday, according to the release shared with Bitcoin.com News, the payments company took the wraps off Moonpay Korea, a new subsidiary designed to connect the country’s banking infrastructure with its international digital asset network. Kakaobank, Woori Bank, and KB Financial Group are joining this specific effort, although each entity has a different piece of the financial machinery to test.

Kakaobank Wants International Remittances Done in Under an Hour

South Korean fintech giant Kakaobank‘s proposed service targets a familiar headache for international students: getting money from home into an overseas bank account without waiting around for conventional international settlement.

Under the proposed model, Kakaobank would handle the domestic application, compliance checks, and initial transfer. Moonpay would receive the digital asset through blockchain infrastructure, convert it into dollars, and deposit the proceeds into a U.S. bank account. The partners want that entire journey completed in under one hour.

Their ambitions extend beyond remittances. Kakaobank and Moonpay are also exploring custody, distribution, and swapping services involving won-, dollar- and yen-pegged stablecoins. A future integration with Kakao Pay could bring those capabilities into the broader Kakao ecosystem. For now, these remain planned services and proof-of-concept work rather than commercially available banking products.

Woori Bank Wants to Take the Won Overseas

Woori Bank isn’t exactly a newcomer to Moonpay’s plans. The two signed a memorandum of understanding back in April 2026 covering infrastructure for won-pegged stablecoins. Tuesday’s announcement ups the ante. The partners now intend to connect Woori’s domestic banking capabilities with Moonpay’s international wallet network, potentially allowing overseas Koreans, tourists, and international students to purchase, hold and convert won-backed stablecoins outside South Korea.

There’s a corporate payments angle, too. The companies plan to test a two-way settlement system through which South Korean businesses could pay overseas suppliers while foreign companies could send payments to the country. Woori would handle customer identification and domestic banking requirements, while Moonpay would provide conversion and international settlement infrastructure.

The bank already has connections to South Korea’s emerging stablecoin business. BDACS’ KRW1 token is reportedly backed 1:1 by South Korean won deposited at Woori.

KB’s Earlier Stablecoin Test Took Less Than 3 Minutes

KB Financial Group brings another interesting number to the table. Before Tuesday’s announcement, KB had already conducted a won-stablecoin remittance trial involving Vietnam. The transaction converted a won-backed digital asset into a dollar stablecoin onchain before delivering the proceeds to a Vietnamese bank account.

The entire process took under three minutes, with fees reportedly 87% lower than a conventional SWIFT transfer, according to the bank. Now, KB is exploring a wider arrangement with Moonpay. KB Kookmin Bank will examine wallets, stablecoin issuance and distribution, overseas remittances, and services for converting conventional money into digital assets and back again.

Its card business, KB Kookmin Card, will investigate whether foreign visitors holding stablecoins can use them to pay South Korean merchants. The collaboration covers both individual and institutional customers, potentially connecting issuance, custody services, distribution, and payments through a common infrastructure.

South Korea Becomes Moonpay’s Asian Testing Ground

The proposed National Asset Basic Act provides a legislative backdrop as South Korean financial institutions explore how digital assets might fit into regulated banking. Moonpay intends to use its South Korean subsidiary as a regional hub, adapting its international infrastructure to domestic payment systems, regulatory requirements, and banking relationships before expanding the model elsewhere in Asia.

The curious part is that three major financial institutions are exploring different routes toward a similar destination: essentially, moving won-denominated value beyond South Korea’s borders using blockchain infrastructure. One bank wants remittances completed in an hour, another wants South Korean won stablecoins circulating internationally, and a third has already demonstrated a cross-border transaction taking less than three minutes.

South Korea has been a hotbed for digital assets and associated services, but the region also comes with strict financial controls. The settlement and payments technology produced by these partners has shown some interesting test results. Turning those experiments into everyday banking and cross-border services is the next hurdle.
