Microsoft (MSFT) stock is trading at $394.42, down roughly 27% from its all-time high of $555.45, and about 20% year to date — making it one of the worst-performing large-cap tech names of 2026.
The stock has been weighed down by concerns over heavy capital spending. Microsoft is guiding for up to $190 billion in capital expenditures in calendar 2026, topping its trailing cash from operations of $170 billion.
That spending gap has put free cash flow under pressure, and investors haven’t loved it.
With Q4 earnings due July 29, Bank of America reiterated its Buy rating and $500 price target on July 18, laying out exactly what the print needs to deliver.
Azure Is the Number That Matters
Azure revenue growth is the central focus. Microsoft guided for 39% to 40% growth year over year in constant currency for Q4, and Bank of America was blunt: hitting or beating that range is what the stock needs.
A miss, the bank said, could intensify concerns about whether Microsoft’s AI infrastructure spending is generating proportional returns.
One reason for optimism is capacity. Demand has been outpacing Azure’s available infrastructure for several quarters. Microsoft’s first Fairwater data center in Wisconsin is now fully operational, which could help convert more of that backlog into recognized revenue.
The remaining performance obligations backlog stood at $627 billion at the end of Q3. Management expects about 25% to convert into revenue over the next 12 months.
Bank of America estimates Q4 capital expenditures at roughly $42 billion. Citi flagged that investors will also be watching fiscal 2027 operating margin guidance, expected to be cautious ahead of another heavy spending year.
Copilot Growth and Valuation
Copilot ended Q3 with 20 million paid seats. Microsoft’s AI annual recurring revenue has reached $37 billion. Management reported accelerating net additions and higher average revenue per user.
Microsoft’s WorkIQ system now holds more than 17 exabytes of data powering Copilot intelligence. Nearly 90% of Fortune 500 companies are using active agents built with Copilot Studio.
Microsoft has roughly 400 million M365 licenses deployed across enterprise customers — all potential Copilot upgrade candidates. The company is also shifting toward consumption-based AI pricing alongside seat fees, which could expand average revenue per user over time.
On valuation, Microsoft is trading at roughly 19 times Bank of America’s calendar 2027 earnings forecast, well below its five-year average multiple of 29 times. About 95% of analysts covering the stock carry a Buy rating, with a median price target of $550.
Analysts project earnings growth of 16% annually in the coming years — enough, in theory, for the stock to double by 2030.
