TLDR

  • Lumentum stock rose 6.7% to $895.20, making it the top S&P 500 performer on Wednesday
  • Coherent gained 5.6% to $286.42, also recovering from the AI selloff earlier this week
  • Corning lagged peers with only a 1.6% gain, still down 12% on the week
  • Corning entered an equity distribution agreement with Goldman Sachs to issue up to $2 billion in new stock
  • Lumentum’s rally was fueled by its presence at ECOC 2026 and continued analyst price target upgrades, with a consensus target of ~$1,148

Optical networking stocks bounced back on Wednesday after a rough start to the week, with Lumentum (LITE) leading the charge and topping the entire S&P 500.

Lumentum climbed 6.7% to $895.20 in midday trading. Coherent (COHR) was not far behind, up 5.6% to $286.42. Both stocks had been hit hard earlier in the week when AI sentiment turned sharply negative.

Corning (GLW) also rose, but only 1.6% to $145.89, well behind its sector peers.

The selloff that started Monday was triggered after Elon Musk, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei each called for a slowdown in AI development. That sent AI-linked stocks lower across the board.

Corning took the hardest hit on Monday, finishing as the biggest loser in the S&P 500 that session. As of Wednesday, it was still down 12% on the week and trading just below its 200-day moving average.

Lumentum, by contrast, snapped a three-day losing streak on Tuesday and kept climbing Wednesday. Coherent also rose 1.8% on Tuesday before adding more gains Wednesday. Still, both remain in negative territory for the week, down 2.5% and 5.4% respectively.

ECOC 2026 Fuels Lumentum Momentum

Part of Lumentum’s Wednesday surge came from its high-profile presence at ECOC 2026, the European Conference on Optical Communications. The company was showcasing live technology demonstrations around AI-driven data center connectivity and advanced optical networking.

Analysts have also been lifting their price targets on the stock. The consensus among roughly two dozen analysts sits at a Buy rating, with an average 12-month target of around $1,148, well above current levels. Lumentum hit a 52-week high of $1,085.68 earlier this year.

A pre-planned insider sale of about $1.32 million by Lumentum’s President of Global Business Units, filed under a Rule 10b5-1 plan adopted in May 2026, created a small overhang but did little to dent investor enthusiasm.

Corning’s Goldman Sachs Deal Adds Pressure

Corning’s underperformance may not be entirely about AI sentiment. Late Friday, the company disclosed it had entered an equity distribution agreement with Goldman Sachs to issue up to $2 billion in new stock.

Mizuho Securities noted Monday that the move appeared to be a way to raise cash as Corning works to complete major projects.

That announcement added extra weight to Corning at a time when the sector was already under pressure.

The broader market was supportive on Wednesday, with the Nasdaq Composite up 0.6%, helping lift tech and AI infrastructure names across the board.

Lumentum’s stock remains well below its 52-week high of $1,085.68.
