Justin Sun said a federal judge rejected World Liberty Financial’s attempt to move all claims in their legal dispute into private arbitration, allowing Sun’s individual claims to remain in public court.
Judge Keeps Justin Sun’s Individual Claims in Court
Sun said Thursday that the decision followed a hearing in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. The case, Sun et al. v. World Liberty Financial LLC, was filed in April and is assigned to U.S. District Judge James Donato.
World Liberty Financial had sought to send the dispute to arbitration rather than continue litigating the claims in federal court. Sun said the judge rejected that request as it relates to his personal claims, meaning those parts of the lawsuit can proceed through the public court system.
The judge also rejected an argument that all claims involving Sun’s companies must automatically move to arbitration, Sun said. Instead, the parties must meet and determine which company-related claims belong in federal court and which should be handled through arbitration.
Sun described the ruling as important for keeping parts of the case open to public scrutiny. His comments represent his account of the hearing, while the underlying allegations against World Liberty remain contested.
Sun’s Lawsuit Centers on Frozen WLFI Tokens
Sun filed the lawsuit after investing $45 million in World Liberty Financial. He accused the crypto project of fraud and alleged that mechanisms built into its smart contracts allowed the company to freeze his WLFI tokens.
Sun repeated those claims following Thursday’s hearing, alleging that World Liberty included functions that could freeze, restrict or burn tokens. He claims the company later used those controls against his holdings.
World Liberty Financial has denied wrongdoing and disputed Sun’s account. Its risk disclosures state that the company can block or freeze wallet addresses and related tokens when it determines they are connected to illegal conduct or violations of its terms.
The company has also maintained that Sun agreed to its authority to freeze tokens under the agreement governing his holdings. No final court ruling has established Sun’s fraud allegations or determined whether World Liberty improperly exercised those controls.
Sun is seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. He also said he previously secured an order preventing World Liberty from permanently burning, reallocating or otherwise disposing of tokens covered by the lawsuit while the dispute continues.
World Liberty and Sun Pursue Competing Lawsuits
The California case forms one part of a wider legal fight between Sun and World Liberty Financial. Sun also raised concerns Thursday about the company’s USD1 stablecoin and financial position, although those claims have not been established in court.
World Liberty has separately sued Sun in Florida for defamation. The company alleges that Sun carried out a public campaign intended to damage its reputation and the WLFI token. Sun denies those allegations.
Neither lawsuit has reached a final judgment. Thursday’s development determines where portions of Sun’s claims can proceed rather than resolving the underlying dispute over his investment or World Liberty’s handling of his WLFI tokens.
The parties must now work through the company-related claims and identify which ones are subject to arbitration. Sun’s individual claims, meanwhile, are set to remain before the California federal court based on his account of the judge’s decision.
