Hyperliquid’s AQAv2 Is Turning USDC Yield Into HYPE Buybacks

Key Takeaways

  • Hyperliquid’s AQAv2 upgrade is now live and was approved by 69.08% of validators.
  • The mechanism directs 90% of yield on roughly $5 billion in USDC toward HYPE buybacks.
  • The Hyperliquid Assistance Fund has already spent about $1.1 billion acquiring 45.07 million HYPE.

What AQAv2 Does

Hyperliquid’s validators approved the AQAv2, or “Aligned Quote Asset v2,” framework with 69.08% support. It extends an “aligned” status to stablecoins used on Hyperliquid that aren’t exclusive to the platform, starting with USDC, and directs roughly 90% of the reserve yield those assets generate back to the protocol after cost adjustments.

With an estimated $5 billion to $5.5 billion of USDC currently sitting on Hyperliquid, that yield-sharing arrangement is expected to generate somewhere between $135 million and $160 million a year in fresh buyback funding, on top of the roughly $771 million already flowing in annually from trading-fee buybacks.

Money moves through the system in 30-day cycles, with the first payment to the buyback fund due Oct 3.

Circle and Coinbase’s Roles

The upgrade builds on a deal Circle and Coinbase struck with Hyperliquid back in May, which effectively retired Hyperliquid’s own USDH stablecoin in favor of USDC as the exchange’s primary reserve asset. Under that arrangement, Coinbase became the official treasury deployer for USDC on Hyperliquid, while Circle handles the technical deployment and cross-chain infrastructure, including its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol.

Circle has also committed to staking 500,000 HYPE tokens as it works toward becoming a network validator, tying its own incentives directly to HYPE’s performance rather than just USDC’s footprint on the platform.

A Buyback Machine That Was Already Running Hot

AQAv2 adds to a buyback program that is already very aggressive. To elaborate, the Hyperliquid Assistance Fund, which channels the bulk of trading fees into open-market HYPE purchases, has bought more than 45 million HYPE tokens for roughly $1.1 billion since its creation, at an average cost near $24.90 each.

Most recently, it added another 26,000 HYPE for about $1.5 million at prices near $60. Moreover, Hyperliquid has also formalized a $30 million repurchase authorization to codify the program. Combined, the trading-fee buybacks and the new USDC-yield stream point toward an annual buyback engine worth more than $900 million, a pace analysts say runs at roughly four to five times the buyback intensity, relative to market cap, seen at Ethereum or BNB Chain.

The obvious risk ahead is that AQAv2’s payout is tied to interest rates such that if the yield on USDC reserves falls, so does the size of the buyback contribution, even as Hyperliquid’s trading-fee buybacks continue regardless of rates. There’s also a structural question analysts have flagged since the Circle and Coinbase deal was announced in May, over whether steering more USDC volume toward HYPE buybacks squeezes Circle and Coinbase’s own margins on that reserve business even as it boosts Hyperliquid’s token.

The first real test comes October 3, when the initial AQAv2 payment lands and the market gets its first look at whether the mechanism performs as advertised.
