Key Takeaways

  • The Binance attack pushed 2026 crypto security losses above $8 billion.
  • Binance reported replacing 95% of affected assets in its Nov. 1 update.
  • Grayscale said losses declined relative to the crypto market’s value.

Grayscale Sees Security Gains After Binance Attack

Grayscale, a digital asset manager, said on Nov. 3 that the Binance hack could ultimately improve security practices across cryptocurrency exchanges. Zach Pandl, the company’s head of research, examined the implications for U.S. investors in his assessment of the Binance hack. The Oct. 29 attack drained approximately $6.3 billion from the platform.

Pandl stated:

“While it may be a temporary setback for market confidence, we believe it will ultimately result in stronger security practices for all exchanges.”

Despite 2026 security losses reaching a record of more than $8 billion, the firm said losses had declined significantly relative to crypto market capitalization over time. Excluding Binance, it put this year’s losses at a level comparable to the previous year’s.

Institutional Custody Gains Focus After the Breach

The custody argument focused on the safeguards available when investors entrust crypto assets to third parties. Pandl added:

“We believe that it stresses the importance of institutional custody for crypto assets. In fact, a growing number of US-based investors have been using crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs)—which offer the convenience of institutional custody—to gain exposure to digital assets.”

He also highlighted segregated holdings and strict internal processes among these vehicles’ typical features.

In its summary, Grayscale stated: “Unfortunate as it is, the Binance hack will, in our view, result in stronger security practices for exchanges going forward. It also underscores the importance of institutional custody, such as offered by US-based crypto ETPs. These vehicles hold their assets at state-charted banks and qualified custodians, typically offering offline storage, multi-signature wallets, SOC attestations, and insurance policies.” SOC attestations are independent examinations by certified public accountants of an organization’s controls.

Binance Replenishment and Asset Recovery Follow Separate Tracks

Binance said in its Nov. 1 update that it had covered approximately 95% of the affected amount and would absorb the financial impact. Less liquid tokens accounted for the remaining portion, taking longer to source at the required scale. By Nov. 3, the exchange confirmed that withdrawals had been re-enabled for additional assets on Ethereum and Solana, with further restoration proceeding in phases.

Stablecoin issuers, including Tether and Circle, had frozen about $2.9 billion, or roughly 45% of the stolen funds, Grayscale reported. Tether said it froze more than $1.5 billion in USDT. Freezes restrict access to tokens, while returning them to victims requires further recovery steps.

Blockchain analytics firm Elliptic’s tracking of 12,000 theft-linked wallets found more than 40,000 transactions across 11 blockchains in under four days. These wallets were linked to the movement of assets stolen in the hack. The firm assessed that only a negligible amount had likely been cashed out.

Customers gained access to a reserve proof covering 10 tokens for Binance’s Oct. 31 snapshot. The tool lets them verify that balances included in that snapshot were backed at least 1:1 without revealing individual account balances. Binance planned a broader snapshot for Nov. 4, followed by an estimated 40 to 50 hours to generate its proof.
