Fenway Sports Group, which has owned Liverpool since 2010, confirmed last month that the group had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club. FSG would keep control of the club if a deal goes through.

The proposed deal values Liverpool at around $6 billion. An announcement has been described as potentially imminent.

Who Is Behind the Consortium?

Amit Bhatia is the son-in-law of Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. He served as a director and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers for 18 years before giving up his stake in the club last month.

Eduardo Saverin is the Brazilian-American billionaire who co-founded Facebook, now known as Meta.

Jeff Bezos, 62, is the fourth-richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $256 billion, according to Forbes. He stepped down as Amazon chief executive in 2021 and also owns The Washington Post and aerospace company Blue Origin.

Bezos previously explored buying NFL franchises including the Washington Commanders and the Seattle Seahawks but did not submit offers for either.

Liverpool’s Financial Standing

Liverpool has been growing fast as a business. In January, the club became the top-earning Premier League club for the first time, according to Deloitte analysis.

The club posted record revenues of £703 million for the 2024-25 financial year, announced earlier this year.

FSG bought Liverpool in 2010 for £300 million. The club has since grown into one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

According to Forbes estimates, Liverpool is currently the fourth most valuable football club globally at $6.2 billion. Real Madrid leads at $9.5 billion, followed by Barcelona at $7.5 billion and Manchester United at $7.2 billion.

Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur round out the top ten.

FSG previously sold a minority stake in Liverpool to sports investment firm Dynasty Equity. This latest deal would bring in a high-profile new group of investors.

BBC Sport contacted FSG about the latest developments, but the club had no further comment beyond its earlier statement.

The deal, if completed, would mark Bezos’s first move into sports ownership after years of reported interest in major franchises.
