SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, one of the cryptocurrency industry’s most recognizable regulatory figures, has submitted her resignation.
Peirce, who is widely known as “Crypto Mom,” published a photograph of her resignation letter with a terse message: “T minus 7.”
The letter says that her resignation will become effective on Oct. 2.
“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve as a Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission,” Peirce wrote in a letter addressing the White House.
The SEC commissioner, who has been extremely influential in shaping crypto policy, stated that serving at the agency was “the honor of my professional lifetime.”
In her letter, she also wrote about the importance of allowing people to make their own investment choices within appropriate regulatory boundaries.
“I leave this position confident that under the excellent leadership of Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda, the talented men and women of the Securities and Exchange Commission will continue to achieve that balance,” she wrote.
Peirce’s departure was no surprise
The formal resignation does not come out of the blue.
Peirce, who has served as an SEC commissioner since January 2018, was set to leave the SEC due to her term coming to an end in 2025. However, SEC rules allow commissioners to remain in office for approximately 18 months more.
Her next career move was already publicly revealed earlier this year. As reported by U.Today, Regent University announced on May 19 that Peirce would join its School of Law as an associate professor in November.
Her Oct. 2 resignation date merely formalizes the departure of the highly accomplished regulator.
As of mid-September, the agency listed only Chairman Paul Atkins, Peirce, and Mark Uyeda as serving commissioners.
