What a Competitor Link Gap Is

A competitor link gap is the set of publications and sites that link to or mention your competitors and do not link to or mention you. seoClarity defines link gaps as “the backlinks that your competitors have acquired, but your website has not,” and describes the analysis as a comparison between your link profile and those of your closest competitors. The idea is simple, and its usefulness comes from what it replaces: a guess about where to seek coverage, made from a long list of possible publications, is replaced by a list drawn from where competitors already appear.

The concept extends naturally from links to coverage in general. A publication that has written about three of your competitors and none of you is a documented gap whether or not it carried a hyperlink, because the pattern it reveals is that editors in your category consider your competitors worth covering and have not yet covered you. For a company thinking about authority across search engines and AI systems, both kinds of gap matter, and the analysis is most informative when it reports links and brand mentions together.

The term applies to any company with identifiable competitors. It is most useful in categories such as crypto, fintech and AI, where a relatively small set of publications carries a large share of the coverage and where a competitor’s presence on those publications is visible and measurable.

Why Link Gaps Matter for Search and AI Visibility

Search practitioners have long treated the sites that link to a company as one of the clearest external indications of its standing, and a gap analysis puts a number on the difference between a company and its competitors. The reason to run one is less to reproduce a competitor’s link count than to learn which publishers consider the category worth covering, since that is where a company’s own coverage is most likely to be read, trusted and repeated.

The same reasoning applies to AI-driven discovery. The publisher mentions article reviews how independent coverage relates to the sources AI assistants choose to cite, and a gap analysis identifies the specific publications where a competitor has that coverage and a company does not. No analysis can promise that closing a gap will change rankings or citations, and a buyer should treat any such promise with caution.

There is also a compliance question. Google’s spam policies, checked on October 14, 2026, list buying or selling links for ranking purposes as link spam, and they state that links bought or sold for advertising or sponsorship are not a violation when they are qualified with a rel=”nofollow” or rel=”sponsored” attribute. A gap list should therefore be read as a map of where coverage is worth pursuing. How that coverage is obtained, whether by earned outreach, by a clearly labeled sponsored placement or by editorial contribution, determines how any link should be treated.

How to Find the Gap Step by Step

The method is consistent across the major SEO tools and published guides, and it can be run with a spreadsheet and a backlink data source.

  1. Choose the right competitors. seoClarity describes true competitors as the domains that compete with your site for the same set of target keywords, which is a different group from the companies a founder thinks of first. Search your priority queries, note who ranks, and keep those that offer a similar product at a similar scale. Three to five is a workable number, and Semrush’s Backlink Gap tool accepts up to four competitors alongside your own domain.
  2. Pull the referring domains for each competitor and for you. Work at the level of domains and not individual links, which both seoClarity and Semrush recommend, because one publication may link a competitor several times and the useful fact is the publication.
  3. Find the overlap. List the domains that link to or mention several competitors and do not link to you. Semrush’s tool presents the domains that link to all of your competitors first, on the reasoning that a publisher covering every competitor is a strong signal that it covers the category.
  4. Add brand mentions. A hyperlink-only analysis misses coverage that names a competitor without linking. Search the competitors’ names on the publications that appear in step three and note where you are absent.
  5. Record the details you will need to decide. For each domain, note the type of publication, the topic, the audience, how recent the competitor coverage is and how the coverage was obtained, such as a news piece, a sponsored article or a contributed column.

Which Gaps Are Worth Closing

A gap list is usually long, and most of its entries are not worth pursuing. seoClarity cautions that raw counts and authority metrics are not enough and that relevance to your own site has to be weighed against strength. The table sets out the criteria that separate a priority from a distraction.

Criterion What to check How to read it
Overlap How many of your competitors the publication covers Coverage of several competitors indicates the publication covers your category
Relevance Topic and audience match with your business A strong publication outside your category adds little
Audience Who reads it and whether they buy what you sell Readership matters more than a domain score
Recency When the publication last covered a competitor Recent coverage shows an active beat; stale coverage may signal a dormant one
How coverage was obtained News, sponsored, contributed or listing Determines whether and how you can obtain comparable coverage
Availability Whether the publication accepts placements, outreach or neither Some gaps can only be closed by earning coverage
Cost against budget Price of a comparable placement Sets how many gaps a budget can address

The availability criterion deserves particular attention. Some of the publications where competitors appear do not sell placements and are reached only through newsworthy announcements or direct relationships, and a candid analysis should say so. Where a publication cannot be bought, the useful question is which comparable publications are available and which of them reach the same audience.

Turning the Findings Into a Placement Plan

Once the gaps are ranked, the plan is a question of allocation. A company with a fixed budget can sort the prioritized publications by cost, fund those with the strongest combination of overlap, relevance and audience, and set aside those that can only be earned for a separate outreach effort. A budget of a given size therefore covers a defined number of gaps, and the analysis shows which ones to fund first.

The plan should also state what each placement is expected to do. A sponsored article on a relevant publication builds a record of coverage and puts the company in front of that publication’s readers, while a press distribution reaches a broader group of outlets at a lower cost per outlet. Neither is a guarantee of rankings or of citation by AI systems, and a plan that presents either as one is making a claim it cannot support.

The AI Authority Audit automates the first half of this work. It measures a site against named competitors and reports the publications that link to those competitors and not to the site. Its Close the Gap view then presents the findings as specific publishers, marks the ones that are available as placements, offers matched alternatives where a publication is not, and proposes a set that fits a chosen budget. The placements themselves are listed in the PR Marketplace, with link type, indexed status, content format, turnaround and price stated before purchase.

Measuring Whether the Gap Narrowed

A gap analysis is a baseline, and the way to judge the work that follows is to run it again on the same competitors after a set interval. If the plan was sound, the list of publications that cover competitors and not the company should be shorter, and the company’s coverage should appear on publications that were previously absent. Link and mention counts alone are an incomplete measure, so it is worth recording which of the placed articles are indexed and how the company appears in AI assistant answers to its core queries before and after.

The interval matters. Placements take time to publish and be indexed, and the effect of added coverage on search visibility and citations, if any, accrues over weeks and months. A re-audit after 30 days gives a first reading of what changed, and a quarterly cadence is a reasonable standard for tracking a program. The same competitors should be used each time, otherwise the comparison measures a change in the benchmark instead of a change in the company.

A company that repeats the cycle, finding the gaps, closing the highest-value ones and measuring the result, builds a record of where its authority grew and where it did not, and that record is more useful for the next budget decision than any single analysis.
