Key Takeaways

  • Circle agreed to buy Tazapay for $400M, adding $25B+ in annual payment volume.
  • With 60% of Tazapay volume using stablecoins, USDC could deepen its global payments footprint.
  • Circle still needs regulatory approvals before the deal can close in 2027.

Circle Pushes USDC Into 100+ Markets With Tazapay Acquisition

Circle is making one of its biggest moves yet to push USDC beyond crypto trading and deeper into global commerce.

The stablecoin issuer has agreed to acquire Singapore-based payments infrastructure company Tazapay for $400 million in an all-stock transaction. The deal is expected to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, including clearance from the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Tazapay brings more than 60 banking and fintech partners, local payout infrastructure across over 100 markets and more than $25 billion in annualized payment volume. The most striking number is that roughly 60% of that volume already involves stablecoins.

Circle Is Buying Distribution, Not Just a Payments Company

For Circle, the transaction offers something difficult to build quickly: banking relationships and local payment rails across fragmented international markets.

“Stablecoin settlement is becoming core infrastructure in the global economy,” Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire said in the announcement. He added that combining USDC with Tazapay’s banking network and institutional customer base could accelerate worldwide adoption.

Tazapay has also been a design partner for Circle Payments Network since 2025, meaning the two companies already have an established operating relationship.

Circle senior vice president of payments, Irfan Ganchi, said the acquisition will increase “Circle’s capability to originate and terminate payments globally, near-instant and 24/7, a meaningful step toward making USDC the default payment rail for cross-border commerce.”

That matters because stablecoins solve only part of the cross-border payments problem. Moving USDC globally is easy. Converting it into local currencies and bank accounts across dozens of jurisdictions is much harder.

Asia and Africa Could Be the Bigger Prize

Dragonfly General Partner Rob Hadick called the acquisition “the right move,” pointing to Tazapay’s strength in Asia and the growing importance of Singapore. He also highlighted payment corridors between Asia and Africa as particularly vulnerable to stablecoin disruption because they remain less efficient than mature Western routes.

Tazapay CEO Rahul Shinghal said Circle provides the regulatory standing and dollar infrastructure needed to take the company’s network further.

“Circle has the dollar infrastructure in USDC and the regulatory standing to take what we’ve built further than we could alone,” he said.

Stablecoin Payments Are Entering a New Phase

The deal lands as stablecoin payment activity is accelerating across traditional finance. Visa recently said its stablecoin settlement volume surpassed a $20 billion annualized run rate, up more than 15-fold year over year.

Against that backdrop, Circle is positioning USDC not simply as a crypto asset, but as settlement infrastructure. One commentator, AKA, summarized the thesis more simply on X: “USDC is quietly becoming the internet’s dollar rail.”

The Tazapay acquisition suggests Circle is spending heavily to make that description increasingly literal.
