TLDR

  • Circle stock rose about 6% Monday as the crypto market rallied and the company expanded its institutional lending products.
  • Circle launched Digital Asset-Backed Borrowing, allowing eligible institutional customers to borrow USDC against Bitcoin without selling their BTC.
  • Customers deposit Bitcoin, mint cirBTC and use it as collateral through third-party lending markets on Arc or Ethereum.
  • Morpho is supported at launch, with Circle planning to add Aave and other protocols.
  • Borrowers still face changing interest rates, collateral requirements and liquidation risk determined by the underlying lending market.

Circle Internet Group (CRCL) stock rose about 6% Monday as Bitcoin climbed above $85,000 and the stablecoin company launched a new institutional borrowing service. Circle stock had closed Friday at $91.78 before opening Monday at $98.09.

The new product, called Digital Asset-Backed Borrowing, allows eligible Circle Mint customers to use Bitcoin as collateral to borrow USDC without selling their BTC. The service is available through supported onchain lending markets on Arc and Ethereum.

Customers deposit Bitcoin with Circle and mint Circle Wrapped Bitcoin, or cirBTC. They can then supply that cirBTC as collateral through a customer-controlled wallet and receive borrowed USDC directly in their Circle Mint account.

cirBTC is now live on Arc.

The approach gives institutions access to dollar-denominated liquidity while maintaining Bitcoin exposure. Circle says the unified process is designed to reduce the number of platforms and transactions normally required for crypto-backed borrowing.

Circle Expands Bitcoin and USDC Utility

Morpho is the first third-party lending protocol supported by the service. Circle says Aave and additional lending platforms are expected to be added over time.

The borrowing positions are overcollateralized rather than based on traditional unsecured credit underwriting. Customers can add collateral or repay USDC to release their cirBTC.

Circle does not directly lend the funds or set the borrowing terms. Interest rates, collateral requirements, liquidation thresholds and available liquidity are determined by the selected third-party market.

The launch coincides with cirBTC becoming available on Circle’s Arc blockchain. Every cirBTC is backed 1:1 by native Bitcoin held through Circle National Trust, according to the company.

Circle originally launched cirBTC on Ethereum earlier this year. Adding Arc gives the token another network where institutions can use Bitcoin as collateral within Circle’s growing stablecoin ecosystem.

Arc itself recently launched its mainnet and uses USDC as its native gas token. Circle is positioning the network around stablecoin payments, tokenized assets and institutional financial markets.

Crypto Rally Adds Another Tailwind

Monday’s CRCL gain was not driven solely by the borrowing announcement. Bitcoin reached roughly $85,000, its highest level since January, lifting sentiment across crypto-related stocks.

Circle could benefit if the product increases institutional demand for both USDC and cirBTC. It also gives the company another way to connect Circle Mint customers with activity taking place on Arc.

There are important risks, however. A sharp fall in Bitcoin could push collateral positions toward liquidation, while borrowing costs and collateral requirements can change according to market conditions.

Circle is also relying on third-party DeFi protocols, meaning users remain exposed to smart-contract, liquidity and protocol risks outside Circle’s direct control. New York customers are currently excluded from the service.

For investors, the service adds another potential source of USDC activity but Circle has not disclosed expected borrowing volumes or revenue from the product. Its financial contribution will depend on whether institutional clients adopt the service at scale.

For Monday, the immediate backdrop combines stronger crypto prices with another expansion of Circle’s institutional platform. Eligible Circle Mint customers can now open Bitcoin-backed USDC borrowing positions through Morpho on Arc or Ethereum.
