Bitcoin Needs Buying Demand to Offset Higher Yields

Bitcoin traders face a month in which economic data could change rate expectations while higher Treasury returns compete with cryptocurrency holdings. Crypto exchange Bitfinex outlined that tension in its October macro outlook published Oct. 1. Its central view is that further gains require spot demand, or purchases of bitcoin itself, while financial conditions remain restrictive.

Investment funds provide one channel for that demand by connecting traditional brokerage accounts with exposure to bitcoin’s price. Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds hold the cryptocurrency rather than futures contracts. Bitfinex attributes September’s approximately 6% advance partly to roughly $2.5 billion in net U.S. spot ETF inflows during the three weeks through Sept. 29.

Buying continued near September’s end, though daily additions slowed substantially compared with the previous week’s larger allocations. U.S. bitcoin ETFs attracted $66.19 million on Sept. 29, extending their inflow streak to nine sessions. For Bitfinex, October tests whether purchases remain strong enough to sustain gains against higher inflation-adjusted returns on government debt.

Bitfinex wrote:

“What October settles is not whether the backdrop is hostile. It is whether that bid is deep enough to keep paying for it.”

The 17 Macro Catalysts on Bitfinex’s Calendar

Bitfinex’s October catalyst calendar includes several inflation and spending releases ahead of the month’s central monetary policy decision. The Federal Reserve meets Oct. 27-28, with its rate announcement scheduled for Oct. 28. Bitfinex identifies the Oct. 14 Consumer Price Index release as the month’s largest single event, showing whether costs the Fed cannot reach are still lifting prices.

The first six releases begin with the September employment report on Oct. 2, followed by the University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment reading on Oct. 9 and September existing-home sales on Oct. 13. September’s Consumer Price Index arrives Oct. 14, while the Producer Price Index and advance retail sales follow Oct. 15.

Seven more events concentrate near month’s end: September durable goods, new-home sales, and Conference Board consumer confidence on Oct. 27; the Federal Open Market Committee’s rate decision on Oct. 28; September personal consumption expenditures inflation and the advance third-quarter gross domestic product estimate on Oct. 29; and the third-quarter Employment Cost Index on Oct. 30.

Four recurring weekly indicators complete the 17-item calendar: Energy Information Administration diesel prices on Mondays, the agency’s petroleum status update on Wednesdays, and initial jobless claims and Freddie Mac mortgage rates on Thursdays. These readings track fuel costs, petroleum supply, labor market conditions, and borrowing costs throughout October.

The timing places an important inflation update immediately after policymakers announce their October interest rate decision. The September PCE release and advance third-quarter GDP estimate are scheduled for Oct. 29 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index is the inflation gauge the Fed targets; GDP measures the economy’s output.

Yield Thresholds and ETF Flows Test the Outlook

Higher inflation-adjusted Treasury yields are Bitfinex’s principal constraint on bitcoin, which generates no cash flow for holders. The outlook places the 10-year real yield at 2.90% on Sept. 28. Holding at or above 2.80% through the Fed decision would support its thesis; falling below 2.50% would remove that pressure. Above 3.25%, the exchange sees disorderly conditions in longer-term debt markets.

Reduced speculative exposure also puts direct buying at the center of the exchange’s near-term bitcoin assessment. In separate Sept. 30 comments, Bitfinex described lower leverage and a need for spot-led gains. That analysis reinforces its October framework: buyers must absorb available supply while economic releases influence the returns investors can obtain elsewhere.

The scale of monetary tightening also influences how analysts assess bitcoin’s exposure to higher interest rates. Crypto asset manager Grayscale characterized the September increase as a mid-cycle adjustment in its Sept. 17 analysis, anticipating limited effects on digital assets. Bitfinex identifies a separate test: bitcoin gains through a full week of net ETF outflows would challenge its explanation of what is sustaining the advance.
