No, Ethereum blobs are not permanent. The actual data stored inside an Ethereum blob is designed to be temporary and is only required to remain available for a limited period.

Under Ethereum’s current protocol, blob data has a minimum retention period of 4,096 epochs, which is approximately 18 days under normal network conditions. After this period, Ethereum nodes can prune the blob contents.

However, the blob transaction and its cryptographic commitment remain part of Ethereum’s blockchain history.

What Happens to a Blob After 18 Days?

It helps to separate the blob from the information about the blob:

  • Blob contents: Temporary and can be pruned after the retention period.
  • Blob transaction: Remains in Ethereum’s blockchain history.
  • Blob commitment/versioned hash: Remains available as part of the transaction-related blockchain data.

So, saying “the blob disappears” can be misleading. The actual blob data can disappear from ordinary node storage, while the blockchain record referencing that blob remains.

Why Aren’t Ethereum Blobs Permanent?

Blobs were introduced through EIP-4844 (Proto-Danksharding) to provide a cheaper way for Layer 2 rollups to make transaction data available.

If every blob had to be stored permanently by Ethereum nodes, the amount of data required to maintain the blockchain would grow much faster.

Temporary storage gives Ethereum a way to provide data availability without requiring every blob to become permanent blockchain history.

Ethereum Blobs vs Calldata

Feature Ethereum Blobs Ethereum Calldata
Data permanence Temporary Persistent
Typical retention ~18 days minimum Part of historical transaction data
Main purpose Layer 2 data availability Transaction/smart contract input
Introduced by EIP-4844 Original Ethereum design
Separate fee market Yes No
Smart contract can directly read contents No Yes

Can an Old Ethereum Blob Still Exist?

Yes. The approximately 18-day period is the protocol’s retention requirement for Ethereum nodes; it does not mean every copy of the data everywhere is automatically destroyed.

An archival service, rollup operator, or another participant could retain a copy of an old blob for much longer.

Therefore:

Protocol retention ≠ guaranteed deletion of every copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Ethereum blobs permanent?

No. The actual blob contents are temporary and can be pruned by Ethereum nodes after the required retention period.

How long do Ethereum blobs last?

Ethereum’s current protocol requires blob data to be retained for 4,096 epochs, approximately 18 days under normal network timing.

Does the blob transaction disappear?

No. The transaction containing the blob remains part of Ethereum’s blockchain history even after the blob contents can be pruned.

Can smart contracts access old blob data?

Smart contracts cannot directly read the blob contents during execution. The blob’s cryptographic commitment can remain on-chain even after the actual blob data is no longer available from ordinary nodes.

Why does Ethereum use temporary blobs?

Temporary blobs allow Ethereum to provide data availability for Layer 2 rollups without permanently storing all of that data as part of Ethereum’s blockchain history.

Bottom Line

Ethereum blobs are temporary, not permanent.

The easiest way to remember it:

The blob data is temporary; the blockchain record about the blob is permanent.

This distinction is central to understanding EIP-4844, blob gas, Ethereum Layer 2s, and how blobs help Ethereum scale.
