TLDR
- Alibaba’s Qwen3.8 Max and Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 are challenging top U.S. AI models in performance benchmarks
- Alibaba rose up to 6% in Hong Kong; Tencent gained 4% on Monday
- South Korea’s KOSPI fell 4.5% as investors rotated out of chip stocks into Chinese AI platforms
- Goldman Sachs says China’s open-source AI models are reaching a “critical point” for global use
- Kimi K3 is priced at $3 per million input tokens, making it the most expensive Chinese model yet, at roughly 60% of Claude Opus 4.8 pricing
Two new Chinese AI models are making waves in global markets, shifting money away from semiconductor stocks and into Chinese tech platforms.
Alibaba previewed Qwen3.8 Max, a 2.4-trillion-parameter model the company says is second only to Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5. Separately, Beijing-based Moonshot AI launched Kimi K3, a 2.8-trillion-parameter open-weight model that scored 57 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index.
Qwen3.8 is launching and going open-weight soon!🌐
With a massive 2.4T parameters, this model is continuously evolving. We believe it’s one of the most powerful model available today, compatible to leading frontier AI models , second only to Fable 5.

Kimi K3 placed close to Claude Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol in rankings, and beat every other model in front-end coding in blind Arena testing. Moonshot AI even temporarily paused new subscriptions after the launch due to high demand.
Alibaba shares rose as much as 6% in Hong Kong on Monday. Tencent gained 4%. The Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 4%, while the broader Hang Seng Index added over 2%.
Alibaba Group Holding Limited, BABA
Alibaba rose around 4% in U.S. premarket trading, with Baidu adding 3.8%.
Chinese Tech Giants Poised to Benefit
Both Alibaba and Tencent hold stakes in Moonshot AI. Alibaba acquired a 36% stake during a February 2024 funding round, and Tencent is also a known investor.
Bernstein analysts say the opportunity goes beyond those stakes. As AI models grow more competitive, cloud providers and internet platforms gain bargaining power over model makers. Bernstein said Kimi’s success is “probably a positive for Alicloud revenue growth.”
Alibaba also has a consumer distribution edge. Apple Intelligence received Chinese regulatory clearance in mid-July 2026 with Alibaba’s Qwen confirmed as the underlying model powering the domestic experience.
Citi analysts say companies with full-stack capabilities — chips, cloud, models, and applications — like Alibaba are better positioned to lead. They also flagged Tencent’s desktop AI assistant WorkBuddy, which draws 8 to 9 million monthly visits, as an overlooked asset.
Chip Stocks Take a Hit
The gains in Chinese AI platforms came at the expense of semiconductor stocks. South Korea’s KOSPI fell 4.5% on Monday. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each lost over 4%. The KOSPI is now 28% below its level a month ago, though it remains 55% higher year to date.
Foreign investors have pulled $110 billion from Seoul year-to-date. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index confirmed a bear market last week, falling more than 20% below its late-June all-time high.
Deutsche Bank noted that Chinese AI models are approaching frontier-level performance while priced closer to mid-tier U.S. systems. That puts pressure on the economics of high-cost U.S. AI infrastructure.
Goldman Sachs said China’s open-source models are reaching a “critical point of intelligence performance for global proliferation.” Morgan Stanley described Kimi K3 as “the result of cumulative progress across China’s AI model industry,” rather than an overnight shift.
The next key date is July 27, when Moonshot AI is scheduled to release Kimi K3’s open weights publicly.
