Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao has retired the public wallet he had been using after token transfers turned ordinary wallet management into a recurring problem. At the same time, the episode triggered a practical interface update for Trust Wallet.
Inherent flaws
Public blockchain addresses are inherently flawed. Compatible assets can be sent to an address by anybody without the owner’s consent. Consequently, promotional meme coins, dust, and spam tokens can be amassed indefinitely in publicly identifiable wallets owned by powerful individuals.
At first, CZ seemed doubtful that most users would find hiding these assets to be a useful feature. After receiving criticism, he later changed his mind. “I made a mistake. A few people mentioned it is a useful feature,” CZ wrote, adding that the Trust Wallet team told him that this feature is already available through an existing “Ignore coins” function.
Accessibility is the issue; CZ claims that the option is presently buried five clicks deep. He stated that he believes Trust Wallet will shortly update the feature. It is important to distinguish between removing and concealing undesirable assets. It is impossible for a wallet application to stop legitimate blockchain transfers from reaching a public address or to remove them from the chain.
Ignoring coins is important
The interface is under its control; users shouldn’t have to view every token that arrives that is worthless, dubious, or unsolicited. Therefore, making “Ignore coins” much more accessible would offer a helpful wallet-management and privacy measure, especially for public addresses.
Additionally, CZ’s experience shows that the feature is more applicable than he first thought. Spam tokens are not limited to well-known cryptocurrency figures or celebrities. They can be received by any exposed address, but interacting with unidentified token contracts can pose needless risks.
Although the retired wallet might still be visible on the chain, CZ’s solution might provide Trust Wallet users with a tidier way to deal with the same issue.
