President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he turned down a proposal from Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He made the comment while leaving the White House.

Trump said Iran wanted the strait reopened right away. He claimed Tehran made the offer because it is losing ground economically.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. A large share of the world’s oil shipments pass through it every day.
What Iran Is Saying
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded on Sunday. He said Iran will not soften its conditions for reopening the strait.
Araghchi said Tehran had not yet received an official response from the United States. He said Qatar and Pakistan are acting as go betweens for the two countries.
He also said a negotiated solution remains the only way to solve the standoff over the waterway.
According to a Bloomberg report, US and Iranian negotiators had been discussing a deal. Under that plan, Iran would reopen the strait and the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports.
The proposed deal would have looked similar to an agreement reached in mid June. That earlier deal led to a ceasefire, but the truce fell apart weeks later.
Trump May Resume Strikes After Midterms
The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump expects to restart bombing operations against Iran. This would happen after the US midterm elections in early November.
Trump said he is doubtful that Iran will meet his demands. When asked if strikes would resume after the elections, he declined to answer directly.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian spoke at the United Nations General Assembly last week. He said Iran will not allow free navigation through Hormuz while US sanctions and the blockade continue.
Pezeshkian also said Iran will not give up its right to develop nuclear technology for economic use.
Tensions rose elsewhere in the region over the weekend. Saudi-backed coalition forces said their air defenses stopped two Houthi drones aimed at Riyadh.
The same forces intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia. This came about a week after similar missile alerts were issued in Riyadh.
Oil prices moved lower following the news. Brent crude fell more than two percent in trading.
Natural gas prices also declined during the same session.
The standoff leaves Washington and Tehran without an agreement. Iran is holding firm on its conditions even after Trump’s public rejection of its offer.
No new talks have been scheduled between the two sides as of Sunday.
