GRAIL (GRAL) stock jumped more than 22% Monday as investors positioned ahead of a major regulatory event later this week. The move came despite no new company press release or SEC filing driving the rally.
The main catalyst is an FDA advisory committee meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23. The Molecular and Clinical Genetics Panel will review GRAIL’s premarket approval application for its Galleri multi-cancer early detection blood test.
The meeting is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET and will be open to the public. The panel is expected to discuss the evidence, make recommendations and vote on the application.
Importantly, this is not yet a final FDA approval decision. Advisory committees provide independent recommendations, and the FDA generally considers those recommendations but is not legally required to follow them.
Galleri FDA Review Becomes the Main Catalyst
Galleri is a prescription-only blood test that uses next-generation sequencing to detect cancer-specific methylation patterns in cell-free DNA. GRAIL is seeking approval for screening adults aged 50 and older for the early detection of multiple types of cancer.
The test is also designed to predict where a detected cancer signal may have originated. Any positive signal would still need to be followed by further diagnostic testing from a healthcare professional.
The FDA meeting has been known since August, but interest is increasing as the review date approaches. GRAIL officially announced the Sept. 23 advisory committee meeting on Aug. 7.
That makes Monday’s rally largely an anticipation trade. Investors appear to be positioning for a potentially favorable panel discussion or vote rather than reacting to a new regulatory decision.
Trading activity also increased sharply Monday. The move extended GRAL’s gains over the past year and pushed the stock well above levels seen earlier in 2026.

GRAIL remains financially dependent on successful commercialization of Galleri and broader insurance coverage. The company recently reported quarterly revenue of $44.69 million while continuing to post substantial losses.
That leaves the stock highly sensitive to regulatory headlines. A favorable panel recommendation could improve expectations for eventual approval, while concerns raised by the committee could trigger equally sharp downside.
Investors should also remember that even a positive advisory committee vote would not equal formal FDA approval. The agency would still need to complete its review and issue a final decision.
