TLDR

  • Bitcoin recovered above $80,000 after falling earlier in the week.
  • The U.S. Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act.
  • The Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points, its first hike in more than three years.
  • The SEC introduced a five-year exemption for qualifying tokenized U.S. stocks.
  • The CFTC submitted new crypto-asset rulemaking for White House review.

Crypto markets faced a busy week as U.S. regulation, Federal Reserve policy and rising bond yields shaped trading across Bitcoin and major altcoins.

Bitcoin came under pressure early in the week before recovering above $80,000 on Friday. The rebound came despite setbacks for crypto legislation and another increase in U.S. interest rates.

CLARITY Act Fails to Advance in Senate

One of the biggest stories came when the U.S. Senate failed to advance the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act.

The legislation is designed to create clearer rules for cryptocurrencies in the United States, including defining the responsibilities of the Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

The procedural vote finished 50-49 in favor, but the bill needed 60 votes to move forward. Four Republican senators joined Democrats in voting against advancing the measure.

Crypto prices weakened following the result, while several crypto-linked stocks also moved lower.

The legislation may still return. A procedural move by Senator Thom Tillis preserved the possibility of another vote at a later stage.

Bitcoin climbed more than 5% on Friday, moving back above $80,000 after trading mostly between $75,000 and $78,000 earlier in the week.

The rebound followed the Senate vote and came as traders were also adjusting to a tighter interest-rate outlook.

Major altcoins joined the recovery. Solana and Hyperliquid were among the stronger performers as prices moved higher across much of the crypto market.

Bitcoin’s return above $80,000 now puts the level back in focus as traders assess whether the recovery can continue into next week.

Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve added another challenge for crypto investors on Wednesday.

The central bank increased its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%.

It was the Fed’s first interest-rate increase in more than three years.

Policymakers also left open the possibility of further rate increases as they continue efforts to bring inflation under control.

Higher interest rates can reduce demand for risk assets because bonds and other lower-risk investments begin offering more attractive returns.

The 10-year Treasury yield also moved close to 5% during the week, adding further pressure to financial markets.

Bitcoin still recovered following the Fed decision, ending the week back above the $80,000 level.

SEC Opens Door to Tokenized Stocks

The SEC also moved forward with new rules linked to blockchain-based financial markets.

The regulator announced a five-year innovation exemption intended to allow qualifying tokenized U.S. stocks to trade using blockchain infrastructure.

Tokenized stocks represent traditional company shares on blockchain networks while retaining links to the underlying securities.

The move comes as large financial institutions explore ways to use blockchain technology for stock trading and settlement.

The New York Stock Exchange is also developing a platform for tokenized U.S. equities and exchange-traded funds, subject to regulatory approval.

CFTC Pushes Ahead With Crypto Rules

The CFTC also took action toward the end of the week.

On Friday, the agency submitted crypto-asset rulemaking for White House review.

The move came one day after the SEC announced its tokenized securities framework.

Both developments showed that federal agencies are continuing to develop crypto rules even as broader legislation remains stalled in Congress.

The week ended with Bitcoin back above $80,000 despite tighter monetary policy, higher Treasury yields and the Senate setback.

Attention now turns to whether Bitcoin can hold above $80,000 and whether Ethereum, Solana and other large-cap cryptocurrencies can build on Friday’s recovery.
