Key Takeaways:

  • Gemini has received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from Singapore’s Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
  • Gemini Digital Payments Singapore has been licensed as a digital payment token provider and cross-border money transfer service provider.
  • The approval marks Gemini’s step from October 2024’s in-principle to full licensing for its Singapore crypto operations.

After almost a year and a half of waiting, Gemini has finally received a full payment license in Singapore. The approval strengthens the exchange’s ability to serve retail and institutional customers in the country.

Gemini Gets Full Singapore Crypto Approval

The exchange’s Singaporean incorporated entity, Gemini Digital Payments Singapore, has been granted a licence by MAS. The company is authorized to offer digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers, according to the MAS Financial Institutions Directory.

The MPI framework enables licensed entities to offer regulated payment services, while the standard payment institutions have limits on their number of transactions. But for major payment institutions, MAS applies more extensive regulation as they have greater operations and therefore greater risks.

The new license will complete Gemini’s regulatory journey, which started in October 2024. MAS initially granted in-principle permission to Gemini, but the exchange remains to be authorized to comply with the requirements.

In April 2025, the company took a significant milestone by transferring Singapore customers from Gemini Trust Company to Gemini Digital Payments Singapore. The exchange had previously been running under an exemption, as it went through the process of obtaining its final license.

Singapore Takes Bigger Role in Gemini’s Crypto Business

President and co-founder Cameron Winklevoss says that Gemini has been operating in Singapore since 2020. Tyler Winklevoss, the CEO, has called Singapore a strategic location for the exchange’s retail and institutional customers.

The exchange currently offers several services that are currently available in the market such as spot trading, digital asset custody and over-the-counter trading services, among other things.

Provision has been made in the new MPI license for these operations to have a locally regulated structure instead of the previous exemption model.

Crypto Services under a Tighter Regulatory Framework

The license does not mean that Gemini can run without any restrictions. MPIs are regulated generally to the extent of their payment activities and the risk of what they do.

However, the approval opens the door for Gemini to get a stronger foothold in Singapore’s crypto space. Digital payment token services and cross-border money transfers are now covered by the company’s local authorization.

The approval also coincides with Gemini’s ongoing efforts to further build out its crypto business. The exchange will also roll out crypto prediction markets via Apex brokerages, which will be a part of the exchange’s broader strategy.
