Key Takeaways:

  • Standard Chartered has introduced institutional spot trading in the UAE for BitCoin and Ether.
  • The bank says it is the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer the service in the UAE.
  • Eligible Institutions have access to trade both deliverable BTC and ETH using the bank’s existing electronic trading system.

Standard Chartered is moving into the UAE to offer institutional spot trading of Bitcoin and Ether through its DIFC-regulated subsidiary.

The launch adds trading execution to the bank’s existing digital asset custody capabilities, giving eligible institutions another route into the crypto market through a major global banking platform.

Standard Chartered Opens BTC and ETH Trading

Standard Chartered’s electronic trading solutions now allow institutional clients to enter the Bitcoin (BTC/USD) and Ether (ETH/USD) spot markets.

The service will be available on the bank’s infrastructure and will be accessed and used by consumers in the same way as foreign exchange services today.

Trades are deliverable and eligible customers can get the underlying crypto assets or only a few derivatives that offer them a synthetic exposition.

Also, clients have the option to settle their trade where they want. They can utilize an external custodian or SC’s digital asset custody solution, the bank introduced in September 2024.

UAE Becomes the Latest Crypto Trading Hub

First G-SIB to Offer Institutional Spot Crypto Trading in the UAE

In the UAE, Standard Chartered has become the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to launch trading for institutional spot Bitcoin and Ether on the market, it said.

The service is run under the Standard Chartered DIFC, regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA).

As the bank previously entered into institutional crypto trading, the move marks their continued efforts in the space. Standard Chartered’s London office became the first G-SIB to provide institutional spot crypto trading to clients in July 2025 by launching deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading.

Trading Joins Standard Chartered’s Crypto Stack

The new service is part of Standard Chartered’s wider digital asset strategy and includes digital asset custody, digital asset trading and tokenization.

The bank has strengthened its crypto offering and is attracting institutional investors specifically in sectors looking to existing banking relationships and regulated infrastructure.

In 2024, it rolled out its UAE custody service, which has already enabled institutional investors to have a regulated choice for holding digital assets. With the infusion of spot execution, the overall trading environment becomes more robust in the same banking environment.

The development also comes as UAE’s institutional engagement in the digital asset market keeps picking up. The nation has created the policies and laws for virtual assets and is welcoming digital asset companies and virtual currency exchanges.

The launch of direct BTC and ETH spot execution from a G-SIB represents yet another traditional finance entrance to the markets, further bridging the gap between traditional banking infrastructure and digital assets.
