Cryptoquant: Bitcoin Price Rally Hid a 60,000 BTC Whale Buying Spree

Key Takeaways

  • Wallets with 100+ BTC added about 60,000 BTC between Aug. 1 and Aug. 30, Cryptoquant says.
  • Mid-size wallets (1-100 BTC) sold roughly 33,000 BTC over the same stretch.
  • Whale buying accelerated after bitcoin’s price broke $62,000-$65,000 on Aug. 19.

The Chart Behind the Bitcoin Price Rally

Cryptoquant analyst Woo Minkyu laid out the month gone by in a single chart, exposing a stark slip. Between August 1 and August 30, wallets holding 100 or more bitcoin added approximately 60,000 BTC to their combined balances, a figure worth roughly $4.7 billion at prices near $78,000.

Over that same window, wallets holding between 1 and 100 BTC reduced their holdings by about 33,000 BTC, and the smallest wallets, those under 1 BTC, sold off close to 14,000 BTC.

By lining up those three cohorts, the picture becomes even more unambiguous because while bitcoin’s price climbed toward its best August since 2017, the buying was concentrated almost entirely among the largest holders, and the selling came disproportionately from everyone else.

Who Sold Into Strength

That’s not necessarily bearish on its own (plenty of retail holders take profit into a strong rally on purpose), but the scale of the divergence stands out. Smaller wallets collectively offloaded roughly 47,000 BTC combined across the two smaller cohorts, nearly matching the 60,000 BTC whales absorbed.

In practice, that means large holders bought almost exactly what smaller holders sold, a fairly clean transfer of coins from weaker to stronger hands during one of the strongest single months bitcoin has had in years.

Woo Minkyu’s data also points to timing, noting:

  • Whale accumulation intensified specifically after bitcoin broke out of its $62,000-to-$65,000 trading range on August 19
  • Large holders were adding into confirmed momentum rather than trying to call the exact bottom earlier in the month.

Bitcoin.com News reported in August that Cryptoquant’s whale ratio hit 61.6% during an earlier dip, a separate signal that pointed in the same direction, i.e. big wallets buying while the broader market hesitated (a pattern extended by the latest chart).

That said, the read isn’t universally bullish by default, given heavy whale accumulation can just as easily precede a large holder eventually distributing into strength once smaller buyers pile back in. For now, the data shows conviction concentrated at the top of the wallet-size distribution during exactly the stretch when bitcoin put up its strongest monthly gain in nearly a decade.
