Key Takeaways:

  • On August 18, BitGo Korea went through the registration of VASP in South Korea’s FIU.
  • This approval will be the first that an overseas crypto company has had in Korea.
  • BitGo will continue to grow a regulated institutional custody and transfer program.

A South Korean subsidiary of BitGo has passed an important stage in the registration process for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) in the country, further strengthening its local footprint. It is a relocation to enable the global crypto infrastructure company to have a regulated footing from which it can grow its institutional business in one of Asia’s busiest digital-asset hubs.

BitGo Korea Secures Direct VASP Registration

South Korea’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), under the Financial Services Commission, accepted BitGo Korea’s VASP registration on August 18, according to Yonhap News Agency.

BitGo Korea, as mentioned, is the first subsidiary of an overseas virtual asset service provider to be registered as a VASP in Korea without acquisition, established during the year of 2024.

It is significant because South Korea remains to tighten up regulations for local crypto firms. By providing this option, BitGo will be in a position to develop its Korean business around its own regulatory framework without being tied to an existing local VASP infrastructure.

Custody and Transfer Services Take Center Stage

After the registration, BitGo Korea will build crypto custody and transfer facilities for financial institutions and corporate-sector clients.

According to the company, it did not give any specific date of the expected launch, nor any details regarding which digital assets will be initially backed up. Nevertheless, BitGo has a base from which it can continue to build its offerings for institutions, under the regulatory structure in South Korea.

The approval by BitGo is a significant step in their approach to providing compliant crypto infrastructure across key markets, the company called in its statement. BitGo will target to be more active in the Korean market with its global virtual asset infrastructure, he said.

Major domestic businesses also back the Korean business. Adding to the existing financial and technology partners to the business, Hana Financial Group has a 25% stake in BitGo Korea while SK Telecom has a ten per cent stake.

South Korea Raises the Bar for VASP Registration

The approval comes amid closer guidelines toward crypto businesses put in place by the government of South Korea. The country has stepped up its review of VASP applicants and major shareholders, reviewing financial health, management, cybersecurity, internal controls, anti-money-laundering and measures in place to protect customer funds.

BitGo Korea is placed on a strong stage with the timing. It is also meant to underscore the rising significance for overseas crypto companies aiming to be accessible to South Korean customers and institutions.

For BitGo, it marks the addition of another major market to its overall strategy of regulation enabled infrastructure. The company is already serving digital-asset institutional clients in various jurisdictions, such as in Europe and the United States, and South Korea is just another signpost toward that direction.
