Key Takeaways:

  • Senior executives in the crypto and prediction markets will come to the White House on Aug. 19 to see President Donald Trump.
  • Chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission Paul Atkins will appear, as will CFTC Chair Michael Selig.
  • The event is occurring one day before a key CFTC committee meeting on crypto and prediction markets.

Top executives of the crypto and prediction-market sectors are likely to sit down with President Donald Trump next Wednesday at the White House to meet directly with U.S. regulators.

The meeting may be a pivotal policy moment for crypto firms as Washington remains to fine-tune the laws of the emerging monetary markets and digital assets.

Trump Set to Meet Crypto Industry Leaders

Some executives with crypto firms and prediction market platforms are anticipated to attend the meeting on Aug. 19, the person said.

The White House’s attendee list has not been released publicly but the meeting is expected to feature some of the top-tier leaders in the digital asset industry.

The event also will likely feature representatives from prediction markets, which have increasingly found themselves in contention with regulators over market contracts and disputes with regulators, and questions about competition and confusion between federal and state regulators.

To crypto companies, the direct approach to the top policymakers could give them an opportunity to raise issues yet to be addressed about the market structure, trading platforms, and federal regulators.

SEC and CFTC Chiefs Join the Discussion

SEC Chair Paul Atkins will attend the White House meeting, an SEC spokesperson told Bloomberg. CFTC Chair Michael Selig is also planning to participate, according to a person familiar with the event.

Notably, the SEC and CFTC are two different regulators for distinct portions of the U.S. financial system, and it’s more recently they have started to overlap their regulatory authority in the crypto markets arena with derivatives and token-based financial products.

The meeting also follows D.C. Housing Resources’ efforts to set out straighter guidelines for digital assets. Fragmented regulations and uncertainty over which regulatory agency is responsible for different products have always been cited as a challenge to the crypto industry in the United States.

CFTC Crypto and Prediction Market Talks Follow

The White House event is set just one day before the first CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee (IAC) meeting Aug. 20.

The committee is made up of individuals from the crypto, derivatives, prediction markets, exchanges and financial infrastructure space. It has plans for discussions regarding the future of crypto regulation and the emerging trend of prediction markets.

During the crypto session, the regulatory uncertainty, overlapping federal and state authority and the absence of a comprehensive U.S. market-structure framework are expected to be discussed.

Event contracts, market surveillance, risks of manipulation, and customer protection will also be addressed in the context of prediction markets.

The two meetings brought crypto and prediction markets into the spotlight of U.S. financial policy within days, as the SEC and CFTC leadership, plus major executives of digital-asset firms, flocked to Washington.
