QuantumScape (QS) closed at $6.08 on Friday, August 7, up 9.8% on the day. That pushed its weekly gain to 16.5% from its July 31 closing price.
No new company announcement accompanied the move. QuantumScape’s investor page showed July 22 as the date of its most recent release.
The rally was not isolated to QS. SES AI jumped 10.6%, Solid Power gained 6.6%, and Amprius Technologies rose 5.9% on the same day. That breadth points to broader sector risk appetite rather than a QuantumScape-specific catalyst.
QS stock still trades near the lower end of its 12-month range. It has a 12-month low of $4.77 and a high of $19.07. Its 50-day moving average sits at $6.95.
Institutional Investors Step In
Dimensional Fund Advisors increased its stake in QS by 134.6% during Q1, buying 3.29 million shares to bring its total to 5.74 million, worth approximately $36.6 million at the time of filing.
Other institutions also added positions. Morgan Stanley increased its holdings by 333.5% in Q4. UBS Asset Management lifted its stake by 456.5% in Q1. Vanguard boosted its position by 11.8% in Q4, now holding over 40.9 million shares. Institutional investors collectively own 29.87% of QS.
Despite institutional buying, company insiders have been moving in the other direction. Director Jeffrey Straubel sold 27,106 shares in May at $7.85. CTO Timothy Holme sold 150,320 shares in June at $9.30. In total, insiders sold 687,540 shares worth approximately $5.6 million over the past 90 days. Insiders now own 3.93% of the company.
Valuation Gap Remains a Key Question
QuantumScape’s market cap reached $3.75 billion after Friday’s close. Its reported Q2 liquidity stands at $859 million. That puts market value at roughly 4.4 times available liquidity, leaving a $2.89 billion gap that current operations do not yet support.
The company remains development-stage with no GAAP revenue. Q2 customer billings were $10.8 million but were not recognized as revenue under accounting rules.
On the cost side, things improved. Operating expenses dropped 14.1% year-over-year to $106.1 million. Net loss fell 14.4% to $98.2 million. Operating cash use declined 8.2% to $56.7 million.
Full-year adjusted EBITDA loss guidance remains $250 million to $275 million. Capital spending guidance was lowered to $27 million to $37 million.
In June, Honda signed a multi-year research agreement with QuantumScape. Honda R&D executive Atsushi Ogawa noted that “QS technology demonstrated compelling and unique advantages during our evaluation.” That said, research agreements are not production awards.
The Volkswagen PowerCo commercialization agreement was amended in July 2026. Maximum program payments were cut from $130.7 million to $75.4 million, a reduction of $55.3 million. QuantumScape received $10.4 million in Q2 under the revised terms.
Analyst sentiment stays cautious. Of nine analysts tracked by S&P Global, seven rate QS a Hold and two rate it a Strong Sell. The average price target is $6.66, with individual targets ranging from $2.50 to $10.00. TD Cowen cut its target from $8 to $6 on July 24.
