Nu Holdings shares are entering a critical stretch as investors weigh the company’s fast-growing Mexico business against a valuation that remains far richer than most Latin American banking peers. The digital lender has gained attention for its rapid expansion and strong profitability, but upcoming events in Mexico could determine whether the stock can continue commanding such a premium.
The stock ended Friday at $14.33 after rising 1.7% over the previous week. However, sentiment cooled at the end of the week, with Nu slipping 1.1% on Friday even as the broader S&P 500 advanced.
Mexico launch draws attention
The market’s focus is now firmly on August 6, when Nu Mexico is expected to begin operating as a commercial bank following the completion of its app migration. On the same day, Banco de México is scheduled to announce its latest interest-rate decision.
The timing has made Mexico the center of the investment debate. The country has become one of Nu’s most important growth markets, with more than 15 million customers already using its services. Investors are watching closely to see whether the transition from fintech platform to fully operational bank can accelerate deposits, lending, and long-term monetization.
A stable or lower policy rate could help shape the economics of loans and deposits across the Mexican banking system, making the central bank announcement an additional near-term catalyst for Nu shares.
Valuation remains unusually high
What makes the situation more delicate is the stock’s valuation. Nu trades at roughly 22 times trailing earnings, while several regional banking peers trade closer to single-digit or low-double-digit multiples.
That gap has become increasingly difficult for some investors to ignore. While Nu’s business model differs from traditional banks, the premium means the market is pricing in continued strong execution and sustained growth. Any disappointment in earnings, margins, or credit quality could therefore have an outsized impact on the share price.
The contrast is notable because Nu was not the strongest performer among comparable financial stocks last week, despite maintaining a much higher valuation multiple.
Earnings expectations soften
Analysts have become slightly more cautious ahead of the company’s second-quarter results, which are scheduled for August 13. The consensus estimate for Q2 earnings has edged down to $0.20 per share from $0.21 a month ago. Full-year expectations have also been trimmed modestly compared with earlier forecasts.
The revisions are not dramatic, but they suggest that expectations are no longer moving steadily upward. For a stock trading at a premium valuation, even small downward adjustments can influence sentiment.
Investors will be looking for signs that growth in Mexico is translating into improving profitability rather than simply expanding the customer base.
Growth story still intact
Despite the recent caution, Nu continues to post impressive operating metrics. In the first quarter, the company reported net income of $871 million, up 41% from a year earlier, and generated a return on equity of 29%.
Its global customer base surpassed 135 million, with roughly 4 million net additions during the quarter. The credit portfolio expanded 40% year over year to $37.2 billion, while the efficiency ratio improved to 17.6%.
Importantly, management said the Mexico operation reached break-even, reinforcing the argument that the market is approaching a meaningful scale point.
