Key Takeaways

  • CME Group will list futures and options tied to Futuresports performance indexes.
  • The first monthly and quarterly contracts are expected to trade this summer.
  • Businesses could use the products to manage financial risks linked to sports results.

CME Targets an Unhedged Sports Market

CME Group announced a long-term partnership with Futuresports on July 29. The Chicago-based administrator turns official sports statistics into financial benchmarks for the contracts.

The companies are targeting a problem affecting broadcasters, sponsors, insurers, stadium operators and apparel companies. Revenue can depend on team performance, athlete availability, attendance and audience interest, but few standardized hedging tools exist.

Futuresports Co-Founder Leigh Taylforth stated:

“The global sporting industry generates $650 billion a year, yet there has been no liquid, robust opportunity to hedge the extensive and varied industry risks that range from weather events, to injuries, to unanticipated behavior issues and more.”

“That is about to change. We’ve been truly gratified to see the interest our business has generated within the sports and sports-adjacent industries and the quality of investors we have attracted already,” Taylforth noted.

Performance Data Becomes a Tradable Benchmark

The contracts will track broad indexes built from officially reported, league-approved statistics rather than individual games. Monthly and quarterly contracts will settle in cash, allowing participants to exchange the final index value without taking delivery of an underlying asset.

Businesses exposed to weaker attendance, merchandise demand, sponsorship value or television audiences could offset some risk through regulated derivatives. Futuresports also expects the indexes to support exchange-traded funds and over-the-counter swaps.

CME Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Terry Duffy stated:

“The contracts we’re developing with Futuresports are built on rigorous indexes and backed by the transparency and integrity that only exchange-traded products deliver.”

“This isn’t just a new product — it’s about bringing real price discovery and risk management discipline to an industry that’s ready for it,” the CME executive added.

Sports Businesses Gain a Hedging Tool

The market could serve companies whose finances move with sports results. A broadcaster could lose viewers when a prominent team underperforms, while sponsors, stadium operators or apparel companies could lose revenue after an injury or controversy.

Standardized indexes would provide a common benchmark for transferring risk. Asset managers, pension funds, lenders and trading firms could also hedge broader sports exposure without relying on one event.

The sports initiative follows CME Group’s broader expansion of index-based derivatives, including Nasdaq-CME crypto index futures and its 24/7 crypto futures and options trading. The latter generated about $50 million in notional volume across more than 7,200 contracts during its first weekend.

Regulatory Review Shapes the Launch

Futuresports will administer the indexes using official league data. Participating leagues will supply statistics but will not control the calculations.

CME Group has not disclosed which sports, leagues, or performance measures will appear first. League agreements, final specifications, and regulatory approval will determine the lineup.

Under the Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s contract-listing procedures, designated contract markets may introduce products through self-certification or seek approval. CME Group expects to release details before trading begins.
