OpenRouter was founded in 2023 and lists hundreds of large language models on its platform. Customers can compare and switch between models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and free open-weight alternatives. It charges a percentage fee on top of each model’s underlying cost — a structure similar to how payments companies operate.
The startup was last valued at $1.3 billion in May 2026, according to PitchBook. Investors include Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, the venture arm of Google’s parent company Alphabet.
A deal could be announced soon, though talks could still fall apart. Several other large tech companies had also been considering bids for OpenRouter before Stripe emerged as the lead suitor.
Stripe’s Push Into AI Infrastructure
Stripe has been expanding beyond its core payments business. Earlier this year, the company said it was building infrastructure for AI and stablecoin payments.
“As tokens become increasingly fungible with money, streaming payments in real time is an important part of Stripe’s economic infrastructure for AI,” Stripe said in a statement earlier this year.
OpenRouter already uses Stripe to process payments from its own customers, so the two companies have an existing relationship.
CEO Alex Atallah has previously compared OpenRouter’s business model to Stripe’s. Both companies sit in the middle of transactions — one for money, the other for AI model usage.
Why AI Model Routing Is a Hot Market
Companies are increasingly looking to use multiple AI models as a way to control costs and avoid dependence on any single provider. That has made AI model routing tools valuable.
Competitor products are already emerging. Cursor launched a routing product earlier this week. Ramp, the expense management company valued at $44 billion, is also building a similar tool. Databricks has comparable capabilities as well.
Stripe is also separately pursuing a potential acquisition of PayPal alongside private-equity firm Advent International. The duo made an unsolicited offer valuing PayPal at roughly $53 billion, but PayPal viewed the price as too low. Stripe and Advent are still weighing their next steps.
If the OpenRouter deal closes, it would mark one of the largest acquisitions in the AI infrastructure space this year.
