Key Takeaways:

  • Coinbase has announced the establishment of the Bitcoin Security Consortium along with BlackRock, Fidelity, Block and other industry leaders.
  • The project aims to research and develop open-source Bitcoin to help prepare for future quantum computer threats.
  • Coinbase will also be implementing post-quantum cryptography and supporting Bitcoin developers with their custody upgrades.

Coinbase is taking action to prepare Bitcoin for the challenges of next-generation cybersecurity, introducing a new industry alliance to help protect the network from quantum computing attacks: The Bitcoin Security Consortium.

The consortium comprises industry giants in the financial sector and the Bitcoin industry to help coordinate research, engineering and public education efforts on Bitcoin’s long-term cryptographic security.

Industry Leaders Unite Around Bitcoin Security

Coinbase has revealed it is setting up the Bitcoin Security Consortium alongside firms alongside BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Block, Blockstream, Strategy, and others in the crypto ecosystem.

We’re proud to announce the launch of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, in partnership with BlackRock, Fidelity, Block, and more.

Together we’ll support the long-term security of the Bitcoin network.

The initiative is meant to make Bitcoin more resilient and protect it from being outcompeted by quantum computers, which are one possible enemy. Although experts believe it’s still years away, Coinbase feels prepared now is the time because upgrades to decentralized networks are costly and time consuming.

Engineering Support Goes Beyond Funding

Coinbase will provide engineering resources directly to open-source Bitcoin development and also give to quantum-resistant progress endeavors.

It provides proposals, technical work and support to Bitcoin’s transition to post-quantum cryptography like BIP-360.

Coinbase Builds Quantum-Ready Infrastructure

Alongside the consortium launch, Coinbase revealed it is developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version of its proprietary key management system.

The company currently provides CoreKMS with multi-party computation technology (MPC), which helps it achieve approximately 99.9% of its assets in custody. New signature schemes that are quantum-safe would be generated using these technologies and secure enclaves on the upgraded platform.

Coinbase also pledged it would conduct an audit of cryptographic systems used in all of its operations to determine priorities for migration and set technical milestones for broader migration once quantum technology becomes capable of certain major abilities.

Developers Begin Coordinating Bitcoin’s Next Upgrade

Getting agreement throughout its decentralized ecosystem is the way to prepare Bitcoin for post quantum security, not one firm’s.

Stanford Workshop Kicks Off Collaborative Effort

In August, Coinbase will be holding a technical workshop in conjunction with Stanford University, to encourage industry cooperation. The exchange said the workshop was the first in a series that will focus on real engineering considerations, and not speculation.

This will be the day of quantum computing and change digital security over the Internet, including in blockchain networks, said Coinbase. The company says it will use internal infrastructure improvements and open-source collaboration through the Bitcoin Security Consortium to assist the Bitcoin ecosystem in preparing long in advance for quantum computing to become a real threat to security.
